How Dental Crowns Are Used

A dental crown is a cap that covers all the exposed surfaces of a tooth. They are primarily used to treat teeth that have been injured or damaged due to trauma, or those that have become badly decayed. Dental crowns can also conceal intrinsic stains and other cosmetic blemishes that detract from an attractive smile. Once the crown is in place, it functions just like your natural tooth. It will also protect the underlying tooth structure from additional damage.

The Same-Day Crown Process

Previously, if you needed a crown, you would come in for two separate appointments. During the first, you would have your tooth prepped for the crown, impressions taken, and then a temporary crown put in place. At the second appointment, the temporary crown was removed and the permanent crown was cemented in place.

Previously, if you needed a crown, you would come in for two separate appointments.

Now, we can complete all these steps during a single office visit, eliminating the need for a temporary crown. When you arrive for your appointment, Dr. Ribeiro will begin by removing the pieces of tooth that have been damaged or decayed. Then, he will reshape the tooth. This ensures there is enough room for the crown while keeping a snug fit.

After reshaping the tooth, he will take digital impressions. These impressions are transferred to a computer where Dr. Ribeiro can design your custom crown. He has complete control of the color of the crown, so you will get the most realistic-looking restoration possible. The specifications are then sent wirelessly to our in-office milling machine, which carves your restoration out of a single block of porcelain.

In a matter of minutes—not days—your custom-made crown is complete. Dr. Ribeiro can make any minor adjustments if needed and then cement it in place.
