If you have anxiety about dental visits, sedation dentistry may be right for you. At Clarksville Smiles in Clarksville, TN, Dr. Richard Ribeiro and Dr. Savannah Pepper proudly offer sedation dentistry for all eligible patients.

People who suffer from dental anxiety experience more than just run-of-the-mill nervousness. Our team looks at the nature of dental anxiety and how sedation techniques help achieve greater comfort and safety for patients.

About Dental Anxiety and Dental Phobia

Dental anxiety refers to severe adverse feelings about seeing the dentist. It can lead to extreme stress, unease, and even panic attacks while at the dentist’s office. Some people suffer from an outright fear of the dentist, which is known as dental phobia.

When people suffer from dental anxiety or phobia, they are less likely to visit the dentist regularly. When they do visit the dentist, their extreme nervousness increases the risk of unintentional harm during a dental exam or treatment.

How Sedation Dentistry Can Help with Dental Anxiety

Sedation dentistry refers to different methods dentists have to help patients achieve a relaxed state. With sedation, a patient with dental anxiety or phobia will feel comfortable in the dentist’s chair, unaffected by feelings of fear.

Types of Dental Sedation

There are different levels of sedation that can be used.

Mild Sedation

Under mild sedation, you are still conscious and aware but totally relaxed. This allows patients to respond to their dentist during treatment.

Nitrous oxide gas, also known as laughing gas, is generally used to induce a mildly sedated state. There is a mild numbing sensation and you will become a bit drowsy.

Moderate Sedation

When under moderate sedation, you will feel sleepy and may drift in and out of sleep. While still conscious, you may not remember the procedure.

This level of relaxation is typically achieved with an oral sedative, which the patient takes at home about 30 to 60 minutes prior to their procedure. The drug kicks in by the time the dental visit starts.

Deep Sedation

Deep sedation is typically achieved with IV sedatives. During this form of treatment, you are still conscious, but are much less aware of your surroundings. The dental procedure will not be remembered, and you will be more groggy afterwards than with milder sedation methods.

When is Sedation Unfeasible?

Most people will be eligible for sedation dentistry. However, due to safety concerns, it may not be suitable for the following patients:

  • Pregnant women: The drugs used for sedation may affect the well-being of the fetus as well as material health. It is best to practice caution and avoid sedation while pregnant.
  • Those with severe sleep apnea: Severe sleep apnea can cause the airway to block up during the procedure, leading to a number of difficulties.
  • Patients with serious sinus problems: Like sleep apnea, severe sinus problems can block the nasal airways, preventing patients from breathing while undergoing dental treatment.
  • Individuals with allergies: Though allergic reactions to dental sedatives are rare, they can occur. It’s important to go over potential allergies during the consultation here at Clarksville Smiles.
